Power Sources for Motorized Window Coverings

Motorized window coverings have become an increasingly popular choice for homeowners seeking greater convenience, enhanced child safety, and seamless control of natural light. Once you have selected motorized blinds or shades, the next step is understanding the various power sources available and choosing the option that best suits your home and lifestyle.

At Blinds Are Beautiful, our experienced design consultants will help you determine the ideal power option based on your window locations, accessibility needs, and overall project requirements.

Battery-Powered Motorized Blinds and Shades

Battery-powered blinds and shades are the most common motorization option for existing homes. Both standard battery packs and rechargeable battery systems are available, providing flexibility for a wide range of applications.

Rechargeable battery systems have become especially popular because they offer a clean, cordless appearance and eliminate the need for frequent battery replacement.

Battery-powered systems are an excellent choice for:

  • Existing homes and renovation projects
  • Windows without nearby electrical access
  • Hard-to-reach windows
  • Standard-sized blinds and shades
  • Homeowners seeking a simple, cordless solution

Depending on shade size and frequency of use, rechargeable systems often require charging only once or twice per year.

Plug-In Low Voltage Transformers

A plug-in low voltage transformer provides continuous power to your motorized window coverings through a nearby electrical outlet.

This option eliminates battery maintenance and is ideal for:

  • Frequently operated shades
  • Large or heavier window coverings
  • Existing homes where hardwiring is not practical
  • Rooms with accessible electrical outlets

A discreet low-voltage wire runs from the shade to the transformer, providing reliable, maintenance-free operation.

Hardwired Motorized Window Coverings

Homeowners building a new home or undertaking a major renovation have a unique opportunity to pre-wire their homes for motorized window coverings.

Hardwired blinds and shades operate using low-voltage wiring installed during construction, delivering a permanent and dependable power source.

Benefits of Hardwired Motorization

  • No batteries to replace or recharge
  • Continuous, reliable power
  • Clean, uncluttered appearance
  • Ideal for whole-home automation
  • Perfect for large or difficult-to-reach windows

Because hardwired systems draw power directly from your home’s electrical system, you never need to worry about battery maintenance.

An 18V DC power supply provides electricity by converting standard household AC power into a lower, usable DC voltage. This eliminates the need for batteries. A cable is plugged into the headrail of the blind and will run to the nearest power outlet by the window. The cable will be visible on the wall but drapery can be used to easily hide this.
